Status Epilepticus (SE)

About 60% of all episodes of SE occur in patients with no previous history of epilepsy.
Mortality of patients with SE admitted to ITU is 5 to 10%.
In a patient with a history of epilepsy, SE is more likely if there is some frontal lobe abnormality.
If SE persists despite medical therapy, then the patient should have a general anaesthetic and be ventilated.
The longer the attack lasts, the greater the chance of neuronal damage and the greater the chance that the attack will resist treatment.
