Q Fever

Q fever is due to Coxiella burnetii and is acquired through contact with animals. It is not notifiable, but can occur in outbreaks in farming communities and in abbatoirs. Treatment is with prolonged courses of tetracyclines. Rarely infection can be persistent leading to chronic symptoms including fatigue, malaise and sweats. Lengthy antibiotic courses can be curative.
